Catch Them Early? When Is the Best Time to Face a EuroLeague Giant?
The schedule drops. Your team gets a EuroLeague powerhouse in October. Good news, right? Catch them before the new roster clicks, before the stars find their rhythm, before the machine starts rolling.
There is just one problem. The numbers do not agree.
The Theory Sounds Perfect
Elite teams often enter a new season with new players, new rotations and sometimes a new coach. Chemistry takes time. Roles need to settle. The obvious conclusion is that if you have to play the giants, you might as well get them early.
So we tested it.
For each season, we identified the teams that finished in the Top 4 and looked at how opponents performed against them during the early, middle and late parts of the regular season.
Surprise: Early Is Actually the Worst
Average margin: -6.2
Average margin: -5.5
Average margin: -5.3
Opponents beat the eventual Top 4 only 26.9% of the time early in the season. That was lower than both the middle and late parts of the schedule.
They also lost by more. The average opponent was beaten by 6.2 points early, compared with 5.5 in the middle and 5.3 late.
The Giants Are Ready From Day One
One possible basketball explanation is simple: elite teams may change players, but they also tend to have the talent and depth to win while everything is still being figured out.
A powerhouse does not necessarily need to be playing its best basketball to beat an average EuroLeague opponent.
And while the strongest clubs are supposedly building chemistry, everyone else is doing exactly the same thing.
What About the End of the Season?
This is where things get interesting.
By the final third of the season, the giants should theoretically be at their most polished. Yet opponents won 30.0% of those games, compared with just 26.9% early.
Late-season basketball comes with different complications. There is accumulated fatigue, injuries, schedule congestion and very different levels of urgency. Some teams are fighting for their lives, while others may already have a comfortable position near the top.
That does not make the late season easy. A 30% chance of winning still means you are facing a serious problem. But historically, it has not been worse than meeting the same caliber of team at the beginning.
The Sweet Spot Might Actually Be the Middle
The highest opponent win rate came in the middle third of the season: 30.9%.
The difference is not enormous, so this is not a reason to celebrate when a giant appears on the January schedule. But it does challenge the idea that elite teams simply become harder and harder to beat as the season progresses.
EuroLeague seasons are messier than that.
Not Every Season Behaves the Same Way
The overall pattern does not mean every season follows the same script. Some elite teams start slowly. Others dominate immediately. Injuries, roster turnover and coaching changes can completely reshape an individual season.
In one of the clearest examples in the data, opponents of the Top 4 went from winning only 21.1% of early-season meetings to 39.2% late in the season.
That is why the calendar should never replace analysis of the actual teams involved. But across multiple seasons, there is little evidence that drawing the giants early is the gift it might appear to be.
So When Would You Rather Play Them?
If your team's schedule puts several giants in the opening weeks, do not assume you caught a lucky break.
Historically, opponents have actually had their lowest win rate against the eventual Top 4 early in the season.
The middle and late parts of the year have been slightly kinder.
The EuroLeague data suggests something else: they may already be going.
Methodology: DunkOnOdds EuroLeague database. The analysis covers regular seasons from 2016/17 through 2023/24, using the modern league format. Elite teams were defined as the Top 4 teams in each season, and their games were divided into early, middle and late portions of the regular season. The analysis is descriptive and is intended to examine how schedule timing has historically related to results.
