How Important Is Scoring Depth in EuroLeague Basketball?
A star can win you a game. But over 40 minutes, how much does it matter to have scoring beyond the starting five?
Bench Scoring Since 2014
Looking at EuroLeague games since 2014, winning teams received an average of 35.7 bench points, compared with 31.1 for losing teams.
But Scoring Depth Tells an Even Stronger Story
Bench points are only one way to measure depth. Another is to ask how many players become meaningful scoring threats during the game.
What We Found
A productive bench was clearly associated with winning. Teams that won the bench scoring battle won more often, and a large bench advantage was associated with an even higher win rate.
But the strongest pattern appeared when scoring was spread across more players. Teams with more players scoring above 10 points won far more frequently, especially when the difference in scoring depth was large.
The Takeaway
Depth appears to be about more than simply counting bench points. A team with several players capable of contributing meaningful scoring gives the defense more problems to solve.
One scorer can carry an offense. Multiple scoring threats make it much harder to stop.
These figures describe associations observed in EuroLeague games since 2014. They do not by themselves establish that scoring depth causes teams to win.
